Determination

Well, another Sturgis has come and gone. Yes, Wayne and I took our annual pilgrimage to the west, this time going by way of Idaho to get there. This is the eleventh straight time that I’ve taken this trip with Wayne. On past trips there have been others – wives, girlfriends, other riders – but there’s always been Wayne.

We rode through rain in Tennessee and in Iowa. We had heat and rough roads. But, whenever I looked in my mirror, there was Wayne. We rode some 700 mile days and some a lot shorter. Each day there was a goal and each day in my mirror – there was Wayne.

What’s the point to this? Well, there are very few things you can count on in this world. I know I can always count on Wayne on those trips. If anything were to happen to either of us I know that it would be okay because the other would help and the situation would be resolved no matter the circumstances. We had a goal each night as to where we wanted to be and we achieved it – even with a few impromptu plan changes. In this fight for YOUR rights I hope you appreciate how reliable and tenacious this man has been. He’s right there with you. Most times he’s there whether you’re there or not. Sometimes he can see you in his mirror standing right there. Sometimes he can’t. He’d prefer you standing right along side of him.

Determination is a wonderful thing. It can be depleted by defeat and set backs. It can be strengthened by a ride through the Wyoming mountains on Chief Joseph Highway with your ‘hair in the air’. But it cannot be defeated in the hearts of those who truly believe. Calvin Coolidge said, “PRESS ON. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing in the world is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

I respect those in this world who stand up for what they believe is right – whether they are or not. At least they have stood up! I get sick and tired of people who complain but won’t do anything – even the simplest thing to correct it. In this organization I hope we have more of the former than the later. This next legislative session will be critical. We have made great strides recently. We are growing. Our legislative efforts need to grow as well – in both people and financial support.  This can be as simple as just making sure those up for renewal in your charter sign back up again. Ask them to join again. Ask new people to come on board. Then take the next step – call your legislator. HB952 is alive and well and needs your calls. Then take the next step – go talk to your legislator personally. Then take the next step and offer to help Wayne coordinate efforts in your area along with your charter legislative officer. Wayne can’t do it alone. He should be an inspiration to us all – I know he is to me. Thanks Wayne, for being right there in the mirror.

Until later, be sure to do your Wiring Harness Preventive Maintenance….

Steve
