Review and Reflection
Well, it's been a year and what a year it's been! I was awarded the honor and responsibility of this position a year ago. And to quote Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, "What a long, strange trip it's been." We've had successes, failures, changes, turmoil, and growth. I promised a few things when I came in. First, I would always have the best interests of the organization in mind. Second, that I'd work very hard. Third, that I wouldn't be doing the same things in the same ways. Fourth, that we would have more than one piece of legislation this year giving legislators, the public and other bikers reasons to be 'with' us rather than against us. Fifth, that my straightforward business style would be refreshing to some and frustrating to others. I think it is safe to say that all of these items have been achieved.
I have a vision for this organization which matches our stated goals - to be an effective political organization. I have a drive to achieve it. That drive is misinterpreted by some and welcomed by others. But, most importantly, what I do, what I promote and what I instigate while in this position comes directly from my understanding of our Mission Statement and my interaction with each of you. I've taken the time over the last several months to get to most of the charter meeting meetings and a number of events. Most times I don't tell the charter I'm coming. It's not because I want to surprise anyone or check up on anyone. It's because I want to see what happens naturally. During these visits I have great conversations and eye opening experiences. It's been great talking with people and finding out what really matters to you, personally within this organization. There is no substitute for open and honest conversation and debate. I encourage people to call me if they want to talk. My number is in the paper in several places. Also, use the internet. Go to WWW.CMTABATE.COM and go to the Discussion Boards. Let's hear what people have to say about Legislation, Membership, Activities, the Officers, Finances, and anything else you want to talk about.
By now you may have heard that we met our goal of vendors for the State Wide Poker Run. We signed up about 116 vendors. We are straightening out a little information on a few of these but it looks like a great representation from across the state. I want to personally thank everyone for getting out there and signing these people up. This was a big effort and you should be very proud. I want to really thank Nancy. I think between her mother and herself she is responsible for more than a quarter of the vendors who will be in the book.
Now we have a real opportunity. We have to get out there and sell books. The books are only $10.00 apiece. You can buy as many as you want and PLEASE sell them to non-CMT/ABATE members. This raises money and promotes us. This is your opportunity to sell them at events and carry them with you to sell during other meetings with bikers. If we can sell 2500 books we would be financially sound for the year and not have to worry about money again. We would have the money to fund a big annual event and really do amazing things with promoting CMT/ABATE. We could have name bands, great prizes and wonderful advertising both for events and for our organization. So, let's get out there and really sell the books. More information on the books will become available in the May paper.
You may also have heard a few other pieces of news from the last Board of Director's Meeting. First, Patti Lowe, our Corporate Secretary and Dale Carroll, our Membership Chairman have turned in their resignations. We are saddened at this turn of events but I understand their actions. They have shown a great deal of dedication to this organization and their efforts have been invaluable. They both intend to stay involved with CMT/ABATE but for various reasons can't continue in their current positions. Next time you see them please take time to thank them for their 'Freedom Fighting'.
Of course, this leaves a couple of big holes to be filled. We must have these positions, as well as the Activities Chairmanship filled soon. These aren't difficult positions to handle. They take a little time and effort but you know you will be promoting an organization and goals that you really believe in. Think about it. We have committees about to go into place to help so if you are interested in these positions, please contact us.
In the last year we have also had a few other officers move on within the organization. I want to personally thank Rick, Stina, T.R. and Merf for their efforts in their respective positions over the last years. Your help has been invaluable and immeasurable. Thank you again for your 'Freedom Fighting' efforts.
Our current officers and position holders must also be recognized for their immense dedication and work. This organization does not run on my back and efforts but rather on that of Dean, Wayne, Nancy, Lori, Terry, John and Crazy Preacher. There is no way our message gets out without the tremendous efforts and time you commit to your beliefs and this organization. Shirley Blanks has recently been elected as our new treasurer. I know with her background we will continue to move forward on a sound financial basis. Thank you, Shirley.
But all of this is moot without the efforts of each and every charter officer. This organization and I cannot thank you enough for being out there and facing sometimes difficult and sometimes enjoyable challenges. They do not go unnoticed or unappreciated but often times they do go unheralded. Thank you.
As for all of you bikers out there, well, you are the reason for this organization and this effort. Remember our mission statement, "CMT/ABATE, Inc. is not a "Biker Club", but a non-profit, political organization that was formed to preserve freedom and safety for all Tennesseans who enjoy motorcycling. Our major goals are to modify existing laws that are detrimental to motorcycle safety and enjoyment, and to enact new legislation in support of all motorcyclists who ride in Tennessee." You are here fighting for YOUR rights and you are doing a tremendous job. I'd like to thank each and every one of you personally if I get the chance.
Now, get out there and celebrate your participation in this wonderful 227 year old experiment in democracy we call the United States of America where the people are suppose to run the government - not the other way around - and pick up the phone and call your legislatures. Tell me, how many other countries can you do that in?
Thank you all. Please pick up the phone. Until later, just ride….
Steve
